Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions — Which Is Right for You?

Both treatments give you wake-up-ready lashes — but they work completely differently and suit different people. Here's everything you need to know before you book.

Comparison of lash lift and lash extensions results

At SkinBar, lash enquiries split pretty evenly between lifts and extensions. They're both lash treatments, both popular — but they're not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong one means spending money on a result that doesn't match your lifestyle or what you actually wanted. This guide gives you a straight comparison so you can decide with confidence.

The Core Difference

Lash Lift & Tint

Works with your natural lashes. A perming solution lifts and curls them upward, tint adds colour and definition. Nothing is added — just your own lashes, transformed.

Lash Extensions

Individual synthetic fibres are glued to each natural lash with medical-grade adhesive. They add length, volume, or both — and fall out naturally as your lashes shed.

Lash Lift: Who It's Best For

A lash lift is the lower-maintenance option. Once done, you genuinely don't have to think about your lashes for 6–8 weeks. There are no extensions to snag, no infills to schedule, and no restrictions on rubbing your eyes or washing your face past the first 24 hours.

The trade-off is that the result depends entirely on what you already have. If your natural lashes are short or sparse, a lift will still lift them — but you won't gain length or density. Think of it as amplifying what's already there.

Choose a lash lift if you:

  • Have straight or downward-pointing lashes
  • Want a natural look that requires zero daily effort
  • Exercise frequently or swim
  • Don't want to commit to regular infill appointments
  • Are new to lash treatments and want to start simple

Lash Extensions: Who They're Best For

Extensions give you something a lift can't: added length and volume. They're customisable — from classic single-extension sets for an everyday look, to 2D or 3-6D volume fans for something more dramatic. They're also great if your natural lashes are fine or short, since you're not limited to what you already have.

The commitment is real though. Extensions shed as your natural lashes naturally fall out — typically 2–4 weeks per set — so you'll need infills every 2–3 weeks to keep them looking full. Miss a few weeks and they start looking patchy.

Choose lash extensions if you:

  • Want noticeably longer or fuller lashes
  • Have short or fine natural lashes
  • Love a glam look for events, travel, or everyday
  • Are happy to come in every 2–3 weeks for infills
  • Want to skip mascara entirely

Can You Switch Between Them?

Yes — but with one timing rule. If you want to get a lash lift after wearing extensions, wait until all extensions have shed naturally (or have them professionally removed first). Doing a lift over adhesive residue can give uneven results.

Going the other way — extensions after a lift — is fine. The lift just gives your natural lash a curl before the extension is applied, which can actually help the extension sit more naturally.

The Real Cost Over Time

Extensions start at the same price as a lift, but the ongoing infill cost adds up quickly. A set every 3 weeks works out to roughly 17 appointments a year. A lash lift every 7 weeks is around 7 appointments a year. Both look great — the lift is simply the more affordable option long-term.
