Gel Manicure vs Nail Extensions: Which Should You Book?
People often book extensions when a gel manicure would have done the job, or the reverse, and then wonder why the result did not last. The two treatments answer completely different questions about your nails.
The simplest way to frame it: a gel manicure is colour and finish on the nails you already have. Nail extensions add length and structure that your natural nail cannot produce. If your nails are already a length you like, you almost certainly want gel. If they break before they ever get long, extensions are the answer.

When a gel manicure is the right call
Gel cures hard under a lamp, so it does not smudge on the way home and it holds shine far longer than regular polish. For most people this is the sensible default.

Extensions build a sculpted tip or overlay onto your natural nail. That gives you two things gel alone cannot: length you did not grow, and a hard shell that stops weak nails from splitting.
If your nails peel at the free edge, break the moment they clear your fingertip, or you bite them and want to stop, an overlay is genuinely the fix. The physical barrier does more for the habit than willpower does.
They are also the only route to certain shapes. Almond, stiletto and long coffin nails require material to sculpt with. Extensions and overlays run from $30 to $50 on top of your gel service, depending on the length and shape you go for. If your nails are healthy and you only want the strength, a plain overlay on your natural nails is $10.
The damage question, answered honestly
Neither treatment damages your nails on its own. What damages nails is removal done badly — peeling gel off at your desk, picking at a lifted edge, or aggressive filing that thins the nail plate.
Peeling off gel takes layers of your natural nail with it. That is the single most common cause of the thin, bendy, sensitive nails people blame on the salon. If a set has lifted, come in for removal rather than finishing the job yourself.
Proper removal means soaking, gentle buffing and time. It is worth booking for. If your nails do feel thin after a long run of sets, taking a break of two to three weeks with a strengthening treatment lets the plate recover before you go again.
Making either one last longer
Singapore humidity and constant hand washing are hard on nails. A few habits make a visible difference to how long a set holds.

- Gloves for dishes, cleaning and anything with detergent
- Never use your nails as tools to open or scrape things
- Book infills on schedule rather than waiting for lifting
